Introduction

PARS .net users access PARS using a SIMS .net username and password. PARS has a different set of permissions to SIMS, these are configured via System management. Most people in the school who do the same job are likely to have the same set of permissions so permissions templates may be created and applied to selections of users as required.

A. For concise information on PARS: List of permissions page listing every permission along with a full description and suggestion for configuring different user types.

B. For a quick summary of recommended user permissions to get you started, please click permissions summary

In addition to their permissions, each user can be restricted in their ability to alias other users and enter certain attendance codes.

Before configuring permissions

The List of permissions in PARS is long and choosing the right permissions for each user will take some consideration. It may be a good idea to select certain "Power users" (IT savvy teachers & admin staff) to have permissions that cover all areas of PARS. After a few weeks they will understand the permissions that the majority of teachers/admin staff will need and a permissions template can be configured based on their suggestions.

To configure permissions for an individual

  • From the PARS main menu select: System management -> Configure user permissions.
  • A list of all available users will appear. Select a single user from this list by clicking on their name or hold down the CTRL and/or Shift keys to allow groups of people to be selected.
  • Click the "Modify permissions" button near the top left of the screen.
  • Make the appropriate selections from the List of permissions then click "Save changes".
  • The user(s) will need to reload PARS to use their new permissions.

Code restrictions

By default, people entering Attendance marks via a register or an Attendance view screen can enter any code (with certain restrictions e.g "*" or "#"). It is possible to prevent users from using certain attendance codes. For example, some schools do not want teachers to be able to use the "@" codes to record lateness, preferring the "L" code instead. Other schools restrict teachers to only be able to use "/" "\" and "N" codes and have an Attendance Officer make any changes as they gather information.

To restrict a user from using certain codes:

  • From the PARS main menu select: System management -> Configure user permissions
  • A list of all available users will appear. Select a single user from this list by clicking on their name or hold down the CTRL and/or Shift keys to allow groups of people to be selected.
  • Click "Modify permissions".
  • Click "View code restrictions page".
  • A list of every code available will be displayed with two columns allowing the code to be "Restricted" (i.e. it cannot be used at all) and "Restricted Lessons" (meaning it can be used in session but not lesson registration). Make the appropriate choices then click "Save Changes".

Aliasing

To limit the number of people a user can alias:

  • From the PARS main menu select: System management -> Configure user permissions.
  • A list of all available users will appear. Select a single user from this list by clicking on their name or hold down the CTRL and/or Shift keys to allow groups of people to be selected.
  • Click "Modify permissions".
  • Click "View alias page".
  • A full list of SIMS users will appear:
  • If no boxes are ticked, the user can alias everyone.
  • If a selection of boxes are ticked, the user can only alias those people.
  • If the user's own name and no other boxes are ticked, they will not be able to alias anyone.
  • Once the appropriate selection has been made, click "Save changes".

Favourites

Menu favourites can be set via User Permissions. Favourites allow users to quickly navigate to the features of PARS they use most.

The favourites option shows every menu item in PARS with a checkbox. If the checkbox is ticked, then users will have quick access to that menu item, i.e. "Register", or "Add a behaviour incident".

Permissions Templates

Most people doing similar jobs in school (Teachers, IT staff, Admin staff, Attendance Officers etc) will need the same set of permissions as each other. Sometimes a group of such users may need access to a new feature in PARS that requires their permissions to be altered en masse, or maybe an existing feature/option needs to be disabled. Permissions templates are a way to achieve these ends. A single template can be set up with permissions, code restrictions and aliases and then applied to one or more users. If the template is altered at a later time it can be reapplied to these users.

To configure a permission template for a selection of users:

  • From the PARS main menu select: System management -> Configure user permissions.
  • Click "Add template" and enter an appropriate name (e.g. Teachers, Office Staff etc).
  • The new template will appear at the top of the screen under Type: Template above the list of users.
  • Click on the new template and click "Modify permissions".
  • Assign a set of permissions, code restrictions and aliases to the template and save.
  • You should now be on the user selection screen. Hold down the CTRL key and click on the people who are to receive the template, they should all be highlighted.
  • Click "Modify permissions".
  • Click "Apply template".
  • Choose the template from the list, note at the bottom of the window it is possible to choose whether or not to apply the permissions, code restrictions or aliases.
  • Click "Save changes" to finish.

To alter and reapply an existing template:

  • From the PARS main menu select: System management -> Configure user permissions.
  • Double-click on the template to be altered.
  • Make the required changes to the template as required.
  • Click "Save" to return to the list of users.
  • Left click once on the template name to highlight it.
  • Click "Reapply template".

Creating a default template for new users

If you create a template called "Default", any user with no permissions configured (e.g a new user) will have these permissions applied when they first log into PARS.

Importing/Exporting permissions templates

PARS permissions templates can be imported or exported, using the buttons in the top toolbar.
