Surveys can be defined here which and invitations made for participation. Additionally, analysis of survey results is accessible too. Administrators have a different view than staff users in that Administrators can modify the allowable responses, whereas staff users cannot. Additionally, Administrators can see all surveys, and staff only see their own.

Response labels

Click on the "View response labels" button on the right hand side of the tool-bar to switch the display to a list of response label types. This same button will also return you to the Surveys list. A response label type is a named collection of response labels, so, for example, the response label type "Happiness" might contain the response labels "Unhappy" and "Happy". There is an upper limit of five response labels per response label type. A response label type will manifest as either a number of rating stars, or as a number of buttons.

To change the title of a predefined response label type, click on the "Edit this survey label type" icon to the right of the table row containing the item you wish to edit. Enter an amended title, and is required change the Display type too, and finally click the "Ok" button to save your changes.

To add a new response label type completely, use the "Add a response label type" button on the left hand side of the tool-bar, and enter the information as if you were editing.

To add, edit or delete response labels within a response label type, click on the "Edit the labels" icon onto the right of the table row containing the response label type you wish to alter. In the pop-up window, use the "Add" button to enter a new response label; an "Add" button will not be shown if there are already five response labels. To change or delete a response label, use the buttons within the panel containing the item you wish to change. You can use the "North-South" arrow as a drag handle to rearrange the order of the labels. After completing the edit, use the "X" button in the top right of the pop-up window to close the pop-up.

Creating surveys

Click on the "Add" tool-bar button to add a new survey. A survey will need a title to distinguish it from others, a pair of dates to indicate when responses to the survey will be allowed, and a completion note which will be displayed as the last page of a survey. Click on the "OK" button to apply any changes.

To edit these details for a survey that has already been created, first select the survey by clicking on the row in the main table, then use the "Edit selected survey" tool-bar button.

Once a survey has been created, you will need to add questions to the survey, and add participants. If, having created a survey, you wish to delete it, first select the survey by clicking on the row in the main table and then use the "Delete selected survey" tool-bar button.

Survey Questions

To manipulate the Questions attached to a survey, first select the survey by clicking on the row in the main table, then click on the "Edit questions" tool-bar button. A Question can be comprised of one or both of the "Context" and "Question" fields. In reality, these fields are equal in everything but the presentation to the participant, so it is possible to use them interchangeably. IN addition, each Question will have options concerning whether to show existing responses, which response label type to use, whether comments are to be allowed, and if different responses will lead the participant to different questions.

To add a new Question, click on either of the "Add" buttons in the empty question panel. Enter the textual content, and click on the "OK" button to apply your changes. You will see that a Question once it has been created can be edited using the "Edit" buttons on the left, or deleted using the "Delete" button to the right. NB Please remember to set which Response label type you wish to use for each Question, as Questions without a response label type will not be shown.

You can change the order in which questions are displayed by using the "North-South" icon as a drag handle to rearrange the Question panels.

Skip rules

In some circumstances, a survey may take different routes through the questions according to the responses made. To allow this to happen, each question may have a Skip Rule associated with it. To view or modify a Question's skip rule, use the "Set skip rules" button within that Question's pane. A pop-up window will show each potential response according to the Question's current response label type. If no rule is set for a response, "None" is displayed, which means that if that response is chosen; the survey will flow onto the next Question. If "Completion" is selected, the survey will terminate on this response, and display the completion page. Otherwise, the flow of the survey will move to the Question selected in the drop-down when the relevant response is made. Click the "OK" button on the pop-up to apply any changes you make.

Participants

To administer the users invited to participate in a survey, first select the survey by clicking on the row in the main table, then click on the "Edit participants" tool-bar button. In the pop-up window subsequently displayed, use the connected tree-view and the student list to select students. Users with a link to these students will be invited to complete the survey when the log in. As you select students by either clicking on their name in the student list, or using the Add all button, the appropriate users will be added to the lower list. Users can be deleted from this list provided they have not started (or completed) the surve, by using the "Delete" icon to the right of their entry.

Click the "X" button in the top right of the pop-up window when you are done administering participants.

Survey analysis

To see the aggregated results from a survey, first select the survey by clicking on the row in the main table, then click on the "Analyse results" tool-bar button. You will see a breakdown of the number of users invited who participated to give you an idea of how reliable your sample size is in considering the results of any question. The buttons to the right of this allow you to view all comments associated with the survey, or to print the analysis summary.

Below this, each question is listed with an indicator of how the participants responded. The button to the right of the panel shows you the comments entered specifically for that question.

You can click on any response to see which of the participants gave the selected response.

Click the "X" button in the top right of the pop-up window to close it.
