Welcome letter

This is document which is used when mailing users their randomly generated passwords. You can use merge fields from the list below:

This text will be displayed as the header for Insight. If this is left blank then the school name, head teachers name, main site address, telephone and fax numbers, and email address will be picked up from SIMS and displayed. You can use the blue HTML button icon the right of the tool bar to make more complicated changes than the other tool bar buttons would allow. If you are leaving this empty to show the default banner, you can remove the email address by using the "Hide the schools email address on the default banner" preferences within the email section.

Login text

Notices

  • Show these SIMS events
Certain SIMS diary events can be displayed to users as Notices. Select here which events are to be treated this way.

Assessments

  • Only show the most recent resultset-less Assessment Manager grades.

Attendance

  • Hide attendance menu items for the following year.
If attendance information is not being collected for certain years, you can remove the menu from users scoped to students in those years. Enter the year numbers of those years for which you wish to hide attendance menus, separated by the plus symbol. For example, to hide attendance menus for sixth form students you could enter 12+13.
  • Hide marks in attendance summaries for the current day.


  • The number of days taken to validate attendance marks for attendance summaries
If you do not want to show very recent attendance records, for example if they are not yet validated by an Attendance Officer, you can enter a number of days here for which the marks are considered to in the validation range. You can use -1 to mean "this week".
  • Hide marks in attendance summaries in the validation range
Leave this box unchecked to show marks in the validation range in a different colour to marks outside of the validation range, or check it to hide those marks completely.


  • Only use AM sessions.


Batch PDF conversion

  • User name of machine administrator for second stage impersonation.


  • Password of machine administrator for second stage impersonation.



Behaviour

  • Multiply behaviour points by this factor.


  • Hide behaviour menu items for the following years
If behaviour information is not being collected for certain years, you can remove the menu from users scoped to students in those years. Enter the year numbers of those years for which you wish to hide behaviour menus, separated by the plus symbol. For example, to hide behaviour menus for sixth form students you could enter 12+13.

Email

  • Your SMTP server name or IP address
This must be entered in order for INSIGHT to send emails. You should also ensure that the mail server is configured to relay emails from the Insight IIS server.
  • Username used to authorise against the SMTP Server
If your mail server requires authentication to send emails, enter the username here.
  • Password used to authorise against the SMTP Server
If your mail server requires authentication to send emails, enter the password here.
  • Your Reply To email address
This is the address from which emails sent from Insight will appear to have originated. Additionally, when users reply to emails sent from INSIGHT then this is the email address that will be used. If the account is not monitored, it would be wise do use an address similar to donotreply@school-name.auth.sch.uk.
  • Optional display name for sender
Rather than showing the senders email address, you can also enter a fixed originator to help recipients identify you more easily.
  • Enable SSL for SMTP
Check this box to use secure email.
  • Optional port to use for SMTP (leave empty for default)
Port 25 is the default SMTP port, but you may need to specify a different port
  • Code inserted into subject fields used for spam rules on internet email
You can use text here with anti-spam rules at your SMTP server.
  • Hide the schools email address on the default banner
Check this option if you are concerned that the schools email address could be scraped.
  • Introductory message for Email
When you compose a new email this will be the default message. You can use the same merge fields here as for the mail document.
  • Forgotten password message for Email
  • Message to send when a username changes as a result of an email address change
When changing an email address, the email-like user name of the user is not automatically altered. This is done using the Match operation on the Users page. This preference is the email message. You can use the merge fields {oldemail} and {newemail} in this message.
  • Redirect all "contact" emails to this address
When a user contacts a staff member within Insight, an email is sent to the staff member's address, although the user will not see the address themselves. If an email address is entered here, ALL inbound contact email addresses will instead be redirected to that account instead.
  • Text to display in the forgotten password box
Leave empty for the default, or a single space to clear any text.
  • Address to send forgotten password requests to when the user has no email of their own
If a user has an email address against their account, forgotten passwords can be mailed directly to them. For those users who do not (and either have no mobile number stored, or where no provision has been made for sending SMS messages), a message is instead send to this address informing the recipient that a certain user will need to be re-informed of their password.
  • Send emails to these addresses when an absence is reported
  • Send emails to these addresses when an address change is requested
  • Send emails to these addresses when a telephone number change is requested
  • Send emails to these addresses when an email address change is requested
  • Send emails to these addresses when an attribute change is requested
  • Send emails to these addresses when a forum post is reported
  • Send emails to these addresses when a SIMS synchronisation might be needed (Emails will only be sent if the Keep Alive service is running.)
Leave empty for no emails, or enter a semi-colon separated list. You can send test emails to any of these addresses by clicking on the Send a test email link. Make sure you have clicked "Update" first to commit any changes you may have made.

Exams

  • Hide exam menu items for the following years
You could enter for example 7+8 to hide exams information for years seven and eight.
  • Number of days to hold back exam results
Use this to delay the publishing of exam results. Leave blank to publish as soon as they are in SIMS, which is before the usual release date.

If you have a different requirement for exam delays, please specify the number of days here.


Exchange calendar

  • URL of Exchange Web Services - please include protocol and EWS/exchange.asmx
  • Username of user to connect to Exchange Web Services

  • Domain of user to connect to to Exchange Web Services


Lesson marks

  • Hide all references to lesson marks
If the recording of lesson registers in not strongle enforced, you may want to check this option to prevent parents seeing a patchy record.

Login

  • Check parental users against current SIMS contacts at login
Enabling this option means that at the point of logging on, additional checks are made to ensure that the user has continued access to the students data regardless of current student links.
  • Time between logout reminders
Enter a number in minutes to specify the frequency of the pop up logout reminder.
  • Hide the cancelable SSO message during sign in
During some Single Sign On attempts you can optionally display a message to the user allowing them to cancel the sign on and enter credentials directly.
  • Prompt for email address when none present on first login
  • Message to use when sending PINs
Users in some roles are required to enter a PIN sent to them either via email or SMS. You can here specify the message sent to them, and use the merge fields {pin} and {validuntil}.
  • Allow unreachable users to bypass PINs
  • Prompt parental users without email addresses to supply and email address at log on
When a user without an email address first logs in, enabling this option means they will be prompted to enter an email address as well as a replacement private password.
  • Extension time in minutes to PIN expiry
If you feel that the five minute PIN window is unsuitably short, you can add on an extension by entering the number of minutes here.
  • Prefer email when sending PINs
  • Trust this host as an authentication provider
This field has different meanings for different types of Single Sign On. It should either be the URL of a referrer page or a semi-colon separated domain name list.

Parents evenings

  • Limit parents evening bookings to one member of staff per evening per user
Enabling this option prevents users overbooking appointments to the same member of staff.
  • Force a break between parents appointments
Use this option to ensure that parents cannot book adjacent slots.
  • Text to show when a break is forced between parents appointments
If you are using the previous option, you can specify how the forced breaks appear.
  • Make break exemptions for consecutive appoiontments with the same member of staff
  • Show staff photos

PARS

  • Store generated Student Review XML data in the temp folder
This can be useful for checking report designs when first setting up the system.

Information which is input in PARS.net can be collected and viewed from Insight by enabling the preferences below:

  • Collect Behaviour information from PARS
  • Collect Detention information from PARS
  • Collect Report Card information from PARS
  • Collect Assignments from PARS

Photographs

  • Show anonymous images in place of student photographs
Enable this option to show anonymous avatars in place of real student photographs.


Proxy

  • Your Web Proxy details
Enter either DEFAULT in the Proxy server:port field to use the default proxy, or enter the address as either a DNS name or IP address, followed by a colon, and then the port number. Depending on the proxy you use, you may have to specify access credentials, and possibly even a domain.

Reports

  • Use the SIMS Pupil Report field to decide whether to show reports
If a user can be identified with a student's contact in SIMS, enabling this option will hide reports otherwise shown by Insight based on the state of the Pupil Report field.

SIMS Write-back

  • Activate SIMS write-back for address change requests
  • Activate SIMS write-back for email address change requests
  • Activate SIMS write-back for telephone number change requests
  • Activate SIMS write-back for telephone notes
  • Activate SIMS write-back for personal attributes


Sleuth

  • Sleuth web service address
If you use Sleuth for behaviour recording and reporting, enter the web service address here.
  • Use Sleuth to provide behaviour details
Check the to divert Insight to look at Sleuth behaviour.

You will have been given these passwords already by the vendor.

SMS

TextAnywhere

  • Your Textanywhere TASC authorisation number
Please contact us directly to receive this code.
  • Use SSL for SMS sending
You can contact the TextAnywhere using SSL.
  • Your Textanywhere client identifier
  • Your Textanywhere client password
The client identifier and password are provided by TextAnywhere.
  • Email address for SMS replies
If an email address is entered here then SMS replies will be sent to this email address rather than INSIGHT.
  • Fixed originator string
Rather than appearing to arrive from an unknown five digit number, you can specify up to eleven characters as an originator string.
  • Introductory message for SMS
This is a default message when sending a new SMS message. You can use the same fields here as for the mail message.
  • Forgotten password message for SMS
This is a default message when sending an SMS message in response to a forgotten password request. You can use the same fields here as for the mail message.



Teachers2Parents

  • URL used to access the Teachers2Parents server
Enter the address to the Teachers2Parents API page
  • Username used to authorise against the Teachers2Parents server
  • Password used to authorise against the Teachers2Parents server
The username and password are provided by Teachers2Parents .


When you have configured Insight to use your selected supplier, you can use the "Send a test SMS" link to test your configuration. Enter a mobile number to send a message to in the popup dialogue and click Ok. You will be shown a message detailing the results of the test.

Umbrella

  • URL of the Insight Umbrella service if used
If user changes are to be sent to an umbrella service, enter the URL here.
  • URL of this insight installation for the Umbrella service to use
Enter the an accessible URL to your Insight installation.


User creation

  • Never use email addresses for usernames when synchronising parents
Email addresses can change, which could cause confusing, and additionally email addresses for external domains are not valid usernames for Active Directory purposes, so you may want to use this option to ensure everyone has similarly styled usernames.
  • Only create users for contacts with parental responsibility
Checking this option means that users will not be created for contacts without parental responsibility
  • Only create users for contacts with Priority 1
It is possibly but unusual to have more than one Priority 1 contact. Checking this option means that only Priority 1 contacts will be made into users.
  • When considering contacts with Priority 2 or lower, only create users for non-cohabitees of the student
If you are allowing users to be created for lower priority contacts, enabling this option prevents duplication of "household" accounts by only creating accounts for non-cohabiting lower priority contacts.
  • Disregard contacts with no email in SIMS
  • Deactivate a users links when the contact has no email in SIMS, and previously an email was found
If you are using the presence or otherwise of a contact's email address in SIMS to denote 'IT active', you can deactivate links during a Synch operation based on this preference.
  • Create users for contacts with court orders
By default users will not be created for contacts with court orders, but this can be achieved if required by checking this option
