Configure grading elements

The bulk add SIMS elements tool allows you to configure multiple aspects at once. Each of the sections on this page explain the various tabs that are available on the bulk add SIMS grade elements tool.

Aspects

First you need to choose which aspect you want to pull in to PARS. To do this, click on the "Choose an aspect" drop down. You will see a list of every aspect that you have in SIMS. You can type a phrase to help you find the aspect you are looking for, i.e. "Attainment" or "KS3".

To add the aspect, simply click on it. Once you have added an aspect, you can remove it by clicking the cross button next to its name. Repeat these steps until you have several aspects on your list.

You will then need to give your aspect a code. Every element in PARS needs to have its own unique code and a code is made up of two sections, each containing a maximum of 3 characters. When creating SIMS elements, you should use the first section to denote what the aspect is for (e.g. Attainment) and which year groups it applies to (e.g. KS3). The second part of the code should represent the subject.

You can give your element an optional description too. This will replace the name of the aspect for teachers when they are entering grades. You do not need to give your SIMS elements descriptions.

The read-only checkbox will prevent staff from entering grades into the element. There is a permission that can be used to overrule this.

In the "Years" column you need to type the year groups that the aspect applies to. If the aspect applies only to year 7 then you would type "7". If the aspect applies to multiple year groups, you should separate the numbers with commas i.e. "7,8,9". If your aspect applies to all year groups then you can leave this field blank.

The priority will affect the element's position on the enter grades page. Elements are grouped by their date ranges first, so all elements being assessed in Autumn would appear furthest left, then all elements assessed in Spring next and so on. Within each of those groupings (e.g. Autumn) the elements will be ordered based on their priority, with the highest priority appearing furthest left. See below for an example:

Result sets

The result sets tab allows you to select the result sets that are going to be associated to this element. You should choose the same ones that have been used in SIMS if you want existing grades to appear in PARS.

You do not need to alter the date ranges on this tab, as this can be done more quickly using the "Edit all dates for resultset" button on the configure grading elements page.

In the "Years" column you need to type the year groups that the result set applies to. If the result set applies only to year 7 then you would type "7". If the result set applies to multiple year groups, you should separate the numbers with commas i.e. "7,8,9". If your result set applies to all year groups then you can leave this field blank.

Subjects

This tab will show each of your aspects. For each aspect, you need to tick the subjects that the aspect applies to. Click on the name of the aspect to collapse it and more easily find the other aspects.

Classes

This tab gives you an opportunity to review the aspects that will be created and make any amendments necessary. Underneath each aspect, you will see a list of the result sets that the aspect will be linked to. Underneath each result set will be a list of classes that will be linked to the element and result set. You can untick any classes that shouldn't be linked - this is usually done where a subject has classes taking different qualifications e.g. BTEC vs GCSE.

Summary

On this tab you can view a final summary of the elements before they are created. If anything does not look correct, you should go back and resolve the issue now. Once you are happy with your elements, click the "Save" button at the top right to create your elements.
